Even though I am an adult, I have never gotten over my love of YA novels. So when I was introduced to Sheila through a paranormal friend and found out she had written a book, I immediately purchased the kindle version. I always know when the author has done a good job of character development when I read the entire book yelling at the main character. Cassy is written as a perfect example of what NOT to do in the situations she gets herself into through the course of the book and her cousin, Amber, is a good example of a best friend trying and failing to do what she needs to be doing. If you keep in mind this is written to appeal to the younger generation (meaning that the conversations can be a little hard on your adult brain... just like in real life) I think you will enjoy this book.Product details

The Spirit Within Sheila Parker 9781300270560 Books Reviews
A must read especially for teenaged girls. The story has a very strong message that we control our own destiny and have the power within to make the choices in our lives to find true happiness.
It was a good story. It felt very incomplete. I did not care for the fact that Cassie was such a weak young woman! Go back to Raleigh because Drew was honest with her? This just made her seem dumb! None the less it was a good story and begs for a sequel...Please.
This is a story of surviving an abusive relationship with a paranormal twist. Great read for anyone from teens to adults. Cassy's story (told from her perspective) makes one realize that you should not settle - move on!
The main character's vulnerability drew me in immediately. And a feeling of uncertainty drove the plot forward very quickly. I felt swept along in her world of love and danger. I would highly recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading the well written novel! Sheila captured a you girl Cassy and Raleigh and an abusive relationship where Raleigh and Casay are in love but alcohol plays a part in it's distruction. Sheila brings you on a journey of the paranormal when Cassy finds that she has hidden powers. She also beings in a triangle relationship with a young man named Drew. I loved the twist and turns used by Sheila to keep me unable to put the book down! Sheila leave the ending of the story open! I am sure you will enjoy this book! I am waiting for the follow up novels and the continuation of the story.
I'm a 40-year-old man, and I still liked the story. If my daughters were in their teens or were young adults (The target audience for this content) I'd reccomend it to them. I think it's a great story about abusive relationships and becoming a new woman with abilities that the protagonist explores. Most young adult stories or coming of age stories need situations that bring the real strengths and weaknesses out of the characters. Sheila Parker has done a fine job taking the reader on such a journey. The supernatural and paranormal touch adds a colorful burst to what was already a purposeful concept. I think it's safe to say that everyone has moments in their life when they need to explore who they are, and when unexplainable or tough situations come into play, we have to grow into someone stronger to keep going. It will be interesting to see Sheila Parker grow with her own personal journey as she writes more books in the future. I suggest following her to see what's next.
Overall, The Spirit Within, is a good YA book of the supernatural, with a needed warning to young girls/women about abusive relationships. Ms. Parker writes to the YA audience in terms and actions that is a part of their everyday lives. I hope to see more by this author. I was a little disappointed in the ending. Using paranormal brain activity to kill the antagonist is a little harsh of an ending for this, otherwise, age-appropriate book,. I would rather have seen law enforcement step in and have the abusive boyfriend pay for his crimes. I look forward to a sequel and to watch this young writer develop into a seasoned author as her skills and talents mature around her abundant creativity.
