This was a good continuation to the Darth Vader story, although it was a bit confusing because I read the Vader Down collection and then came to this one, but it seems the actual chronology is the Annual at the beginning of this collection, then Vader Down, then the rest of Volume 3. I do see why the Annual was included in this Volume rather than the end of Volume 2, because it does deal with the Shu-Torun world which is where the whole volume takes place. It did feel like this collection was mostly it's own self-contained series that was a bit different in tone to the rest of the series up to this point. It was also a bit disappointing that Aphra was not in this collection, so I am looking forward to having her back in Volume 4. It is still a great continuation to the wonderful Darth Vader comic series.Product details

Star Wars Doctor Aphra 2016 #4 eBook Kieron Gillen Kev Walker Kamome Shirahama Reviews
Great artwork and good writing but after the first two books and Vader Down, I find myself losing interest as the series seemingly drags on and loses momentum. This book adds very little to the new canon unlike the main title series. Not terrible by any means but this may be for absolute diehards only. You won't be missing anything of real note if you leave this one on the shelf.
3.5 stars.
The art is good - the splash pages are quite good.
This series focuses on Darth Vader and his conflicts with other forces within the Empire. Reading (and observing) stories where he crushes his opposition is fun and the kind of dominant fights that fans of Empire Strikes Back have been hankering for decades. The story loses a little with the intrigue within the Empire, particularly where different Generals, Admirals and advisors plot against him. This is not a young Vader that is being challenged post Episode three, but a height-of-his powers Vader 20 years into the job. The idea that the Emperor finds this acceptable doesn't jibe well with that kind of long-term working relationship (even for Sith lords, who are always wary of each other).
That critique aside, it's a fun read and Star Wars fans will be pleased.
I am addicted to this crazy character. Great writing, great supporting cast. Dr. Laura and her killer droids are perhaps the best new characters in the Star Wars universe. Oddly enough the movies don't really interest me, but the stories in these comics are great. Kudos to the creativity of the writers and artists.
This arc was just okay for me. I am not personally a huge fan of Cylo and his team of would be Vader replacements. I feel they are throw away characters and weak storytelling. I wouldn't want to see Cylo and his team on the big screen. But that being said I like seeing a new world and as always the Vader action is really good. Rouge One and these comics have really started to give us an understanding of why Vader should be feared.
5 out of 5 stars
He instructs the new queen and a very quick study she is their will be no more trouble on this mining planet thanks to Professor Vader's class on how to be a ruler I have no doubt he used his own plans if he were to take charge of the Sith.
I miss Doctor Aphra. The droids are fun. This volume finds Darth Vader dealing with a war and royal families on a supply planet. I am so over the other potential apprentices of the Emperor. They're annoying.
Queen Trios is a really interesting character. I like the culture of glamour and dukes on this planet. An intensely courtly culture.
I give this volume a 3/5. It continues the Darth Vader story, but nothing special happens in this volume. Hopefully the next volume picks up the pace.
I have to say that I really had a tough time wrapping my head around both the writing and art style of the Darth Vader graphic novels. Kieron Gillen isn't very clear in his approach and I find myself having to re-read several portions to understand what's going on. Same goes for Salvador Larocca's artwork. It's just so mysterious at times and I find myself needing re-cover material that should have a simple flow to it. All that being said, Gillen is a visionary and has come up with some brilliant concepts that are enjoyable to experience. Telling the story from the perspective of the Empire, and slowly seeing Darth Vader's character develop from what we see between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is quite enjoyable. All-in-all a solid-enough story to get 4-star review from me.
